We are a well-established and active choir with over 30 members, offering a diverse repertoire that includes popular songs, musical theatre pieces, and classical MVC arrangements. Originally formed as a social club of Vauxhall Motors, the choir have no links or funding from Vauxhall for several years, and membership is open to adult men who sing. We sing with other choirs in joint concerts, we have an “away concert trip” each year - a trip to Malvern is planned for April 2026. We have recorded several CDs, and an LP (1970s), and would like to record again with recent repertoire and unique VLMVC versions of songs. Rehearsals are held weekly on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM in High Town, Luton, Bedfordshire. We are looking for an enthusiastic Musical Director who can honour our rich heritage [80+ years] while also guiding us into new musical directions. The choir is organised democratically and run by an annually elected committee, allowing the Musical Director to focus fully on musical leadership. We also enjoy strong support from talented musicians who accompany the choir and assist with conducting when needed. VLMVC has had male and female MDs up to now and welcome enquiries from either. Proven musical qualifications, conducting/choir leadership experience and references will be welcomed, but a passion for male voice music and commitment to the choir are valued. A local candidate would be ideal. The role of Musical Director has traditionally included financial remuneration on a fee basis (without deduction of PAYE/NIC), which we are happy to discuss with interested candidates. N1. START date? Negotiable, but MD should be in place by January/early 2026
N2. We seek a full MD. (Full MD conducts most concerts, chooses music in use and advises when new choristers are ready to join the choir in concert)
N3. Does the MD “do it all” or is there committee help. (MD does Music, cttee do admin & help.)
N4. Does the MD organise bookings, concerts, guests etc. (Jointly & consultatively with cttee.)
N5. How many performances a year. (Annually 6 - 12 concerts and 6+ one-hour "Care-home” sings, plus 3-6 funerals of “choir associated” persons.)
N6. There will be auditions - Candidates may be invited to rehearse two contrasting pieces from the choir’s current programme with agreed preparation time. Maybe rehearse an unseen piece. Maybe demonstrate warm-up/cool-down sessions as part of the audition - followed by interview with choir subcommittee on how it went.
N7. Once a formal letter of offer has been accepted a probation period of 3 months will apply after which the committee will write to confirm or cancel the agreement.
N8. VLMVC is always seeking to recruit more members. Any assistance with PR, Promotion and networking will be beneficial.
N9. VLMVC is a member of the National Association of Choirs and is a not-for-profit community choir run by elected committee according to a written constitution.
